Ned Fox Name: Ned Fox

Current role: Assistant Investment Manager

Department: Investment Management

University: St Andrews

Degree: Classics

I joined the Investment Department at Smith & Williamson in September 2009 and am on the graduate rotation programme. The firm interested me as the rotation programme offers you the opportunity to experience all the facets of investment management and find the area which suits you best. The focus on private clients suits me as it mixes investment management with client relationships, and allows me to use both my analytical and interpersonal skills.

I spent the first four months in our back office, with roles in settlements, database and compliance, before moving into the front office in January. I am currently rotating around various teams as an assistant to the private-client fund managers, and will have a permanent team placement by early 2011. My role involves researching stocks and funds, reviewing client portfolios, placing deals and doing client administration. I particularly enjoy discussing investment ideas with fund managers, and meeting company management, which gives you a direct insight into how their businesses operate. In addition to the day-to-day work, I have also completed my IMC qualification and have started the CISIM Wealth Management course.

To be successful in private-client fund management, I think you need an analytical mind, good organisational skills and a keen interest in financial markets. It is important to be numerate, but, as my academic background suggests, a degree in economics or finance isn’t a prerequisite. You also need to be confident and personable, as this is crucial to fostering successful client relationships.

Overall, a career in Investment at Smith & Williamson will be challenging and varied. There are plenty of opportunities to learn, and colleagues are very helpful in offering their support and expertise as you develop your career here.
