Ramana Thirumoorthy
Name: Ramana Thirumoorthy
Current role: Senior
Department: Corporate Tax
University: Nottingham
Degree: Economics Econometrics
I started my training contract in September 2007. Over the last three years, I have developed a varied portfolio of clients. My clients span from financial services (mainly buy-side) to property development, as well as technology and media. They differ in sizes from small LLPs to larger listed companies. My work involves providing practical, comprehensible and cost-efficient tax advice.
The high degree of client interaction has taught me to appreciate my clients' businesses, especially the need for sustainability and long-term planning. The breadth of work has also been mentally stimulating. My work has increased my knowledge about many areas outside corporate taxes, including company law, management accounting, shareholder issues and insolvency procedures.
Studying for the ACA while working was difficult but I always had enough support from the team here. I have always been given enough time to develop my technical knowledge as well as work skills, with only a healthy amount of pressure. Besides that, our department has varied social interests, which always helps keep office life enjoyable. Like any job, you need to be motivated and a self-starter to succeed at Smith & Williamson. The environment is very conducive for such individuals to advance in their careers.
