Rachel Waterman Name: Rachel Waterman

Current role: Manager

Department: Private Client Tax Services

I joined in November 2001 as a tax assistant and saw Smith & Williamson as a developing firm where I could progress my career and obtain my ATT (Association of Tax Technicians) and CTA (Chartered Tax Adviser) qualifications. Since then, I’ve progressed from a junior tax assistant to manager within the Private Client Tax Services department in Salisbury.

I now work as a Director's Assistant specialising in planning and compliance for individuals, trusts and partnerships. I’m also the social committee chairman which includes arranging monthly events for the office, from pub quizzes and meals out to Christmas and Summer parties - the social aspect is a big part of working for Smith & Williamson.

In addition to my role as a Director's Assistant I also help the private tax department with technical and compliance work and ensure that we offer the best possible client service. It’s this extra responsibility, along with the need to prioritise my own workload, that’s enabled me to develop important skills like team management and delegation.

With a strong focus on building long term working relationships, I’ve learned lots about the importance of knowing your clients. I think someone who’s determined, hardworking and has an outgoing personality will have a successful career at Smith & Williamson. It’s a firm that recognises those who want to progress and if you show a desire to take on responsibility and go that extra bit further, the firm will support you in everything you do. This, along with the relaxed office atmosphere, are the two main reasons I see myself at Smith & Williamson for a long time to come.
