Even back in November 1998, when I joined, Smith & Williamson was known for its friendly atmosphere, great locations and personable people. I started off in Corporate Tax and have stayed in the department since, managing a portfolio of challenging companies and filing their tax returns. I’m the first point of contact for clients dealing with ad hoc queries and I also work on assignments where a company may be disposing of assets or shareholders of shares.
My varied portfolio of companies in the property, retail and financial services sectors means a whole range of tax areas are looked at and advised on, and I’m always learning. This spread of knowledge is key to becoming a successful adviser and the wide understanding of tax this gives helps me advise clients quickly and accurately.
As far as job satisfaction is concerned, the level of responsibility I have now gives me a real sense of achievement. I drive processes, meet deadlines and have recently been involved in two property transactions of several £100m. If you’re a hard worker, self-starter and always willing to learn, you’ll do very well at Smith & Williamson. It can be tough at times, but that’s met by the great social life we have outside the office.
