I first joined as a graduate trainee because I really needed a job! However, as I found out more about Smith & Williamson I was impressed by the offices and the professionalism of the firm. I was interviewed by a senior manager and a director - both pleasant and ‘real’ people who I’d be working for. There was a good training plan in place and I felt like I’d be valued as an individual.

Starting off in audit, I progressed from trainee to audit senior, then through the manager grades, before becoming an associate director in 2004 and a director in 2006. Technical skills have been extremely important to me, as have problem solving and presenting. I have also gained valuable meeting and marketing skills. There’s no doubt that we work to a very high standard and we expect new grads to produce high quality work and not be prepared to settle for less.

The culture is one of providing high quality services to our clients. We work hard, although a good work/life balance is also important. There are no prizes for being first in or last out the office, although overtime when required is appreciated. We also have a strong team ethic and regularly socialise together, although I appreciate the directors don’t get invited to everything!
