When I joined in December 2004, I was attracted by Smith & Williamson’s reputation as a good accountancy firm to get the ACA (Associate Chartered Accountant) qualification with and the fact that it was growing within the market place. Initially, I was involved with analytical and statistical work to gain an understanding of a case, but as I became experienced I worked much more on report writing. Now a senior forensic accountant, I’ve got greater responsibility and work closely with directors, and this has been invaluable to my career progression. I’m really glad to be where I am right now as it’s a friendly, relaxed and supportive work environment where you can run any problems by directors. I’ve got an honest and open relationship with my colleagues and there’s a lot of interaction between other departments. You could quite happily approach graduates in Assurance & Business Services for tax-related issues or for specific industries, and guarantee a helpful response.
I can see my future in the forensic team and making use of the opportunities available to me. I enjoy the wide variety of work, it’s a good firm to train with and you’re encouraged to push yourself, so I’ve no reason to look anywhere else. Working on a smaller team means you regularly interact with directors, and this helps you develop on a personal level as much as it does professionally.
