Investment Management

What we do

Managing £9.9 billion of funds under management and advice (as at 30 April 2010), our Investment Management offering comprises an institutional fund management team, 30 private client teams and an institutional bond sales desk. A central investment process is discussed at weekly and monthly meetings to develop best ideas, current themes and to alter our model portfolios.

The institutional team focuses on specific assets or geographical regions. Current funds include: a UK hedge fund, a North America fund, a far Eastern fund, a UK smaller companies fund, a UK equity high yield fund, a UK bond fund and a special situations fund.

The largest part of the business is the private client side, providing predominantly discretionary services to a variety of clients including on and off shore private clients, SIPPS (private pensions), trusts and OEICs. With a client-driven philosophy, investment objectives are based on our understanding of clients’ needs and their appetite for differing asset classes. The department works closely with other parts of the group.

Our clients

We deal with a whole range of clients, including private individuals, their trusts, charities and smaller pension funds. Our clients have different investment objectives, risk profiles and income objectives, so there are plenty of challenging projects to work on.

What you can expect

You’ll receive a friendly introduction to the department during the group induction, which is the perfect time to get to know people and gather internal contacts. You’ll then be seconded to our Compliance, Private Banking and Middle office departments that provides back office support to Investment Management, where you’ll pick up essential knowledge.

Moving to the front office, you’ll become familiar to the different teams, their clients and their specialist areas, after which you’ll be allocated a team. Working alongside a director, an associate director, one graduate and one secretary, you’ll get direct support and input.

You’ll also study for the IMC (Investment Management Certificate), followed by the SIIM (Securities and Investment Institute Masters) in Wealth Management. Qualifications like these are essential, boost your understanding of the industry and give clients reassurance. We help along the way - giving you time off for study and courses to perfect your skills in areas like presentation and networking.

Career progression

You can look forward to a variety of work challenges and increasing responsibility, all within a fast moving and growing market. If you’ve got the drive and show us just what you can do, you’ll find plenty of opportunity for fast progression.
