Corporate Tax

What we do

Making sure companies are tax efficient through a high level of advice and consultancy, we offer a complete corporate tax service. Through two areas - the first to set up new business correctly and the second to manage existing businesses - ours is one of industry’s most comprehensive services.

We help companies save tax, for example, by claiming all allowances as early as possible. Calling for the right amount of capital, research and development allowances, allows for the reduction of taxable profits and is just another example of client understanding strengthening the business.

Our clients

We work with a whole range of clients from start-ups and small companies, to large corporations and multi-nationals, specialising in owner-managed businesses, media, property and financial services businesses.

What you can expect

With full study support during your three-year training contract, you’ll get all the help you need to secure your ACA (Associate Chartered Accountant) or Tax qualification. What’s more, we organise internal courses to cover every area of your studies. Whether it’s computer software skills, presentation, interview and time-management skills, it’s our job to give you the most rounded skill set we can.

In the first year, you’ll be picking up hands-on work experience - assisting with client work, liaising with HM Revenue & Customs, undertaking ad hoc research for directors and helping to produce presentations. You’ll also be assigned a ‘buddy’ and be given support from a director in our mentoring system, with personal development being the foundation of Smith & Williamson.

You’ll be allocated your own clients in the second year, but will still be working with the guidance of a manager or director. You’ll refine your communication skills and analytical skills, too, making presentations and preparing tax numbers.

Career progression

Once you’ve qualified you can look forward to more responsibility, in your role as a ‘senior’. Developing your management skills, you’ll manage the new graduates who will be assisting you and return the attention that helped you through your early stages.

If you prove yourself, it’s realistic to aim for management within two years. And, although you can stay within corporate tax, secondments in other areas of the business are encouraged to broaden your knowledge and experience.
